Colorado Mountain Towns Guide

10 min read Updated March 2026

The mountain corridor west of Denver along I-70 is one of the most accessible wilderness areas in the country. Within an hour of downtown Denver, you're at 9,000 feet, surrounded by peaks, canyons, and towns that have been drawing adventurers since the gold rush days.

Clear Creek County — home to Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and Empire — is the heart of what we call the mountain corridor. It's less crowded than Summit County, more affordable, and arguably more authentic. The towns feel like real places, not resort villages.

This guide covers the mountain towns where Tailored Stays manages properties: Idaho Springs, Georgetown, Evergreen, and Golden. Each has its own character, and each rewards a longer stay than most visitors give it.

The Towns

Gateway to the High Country

Practical Tips

Altitude: Most mountain towns sit between 7,000 and 9,000 feet. Drink extra water, take it easy on the first day, and avoid heavy alcohol consumption the first night. Altitude sickness is real — don't ignore headaches.

Weather: Mountain weather changes fast. Even in summer, afternoon thunderstorms are common above treeline. Start hikes early, bring a rain layer, and check the forecast before heading out.

Cell service: Spotty in canyons and on mountain roads. Download offline maps before you leave Denver. Our properties have strong WiFi, but plan accordingly for day trips.

Wildlife: You will see wildlife — elk, deer, foxes, and occasionally bears. Keep food secured, don't approach animals, and enjoy the experience from a respectful distance.
